The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 place significant documentation requirements on principal contractors and principal designers. But the real compliance pressure in construction is day-to-day: risk assessments completed before work starts, method statements reviewed and communicated, toolbox talks delivered and recorded, incidents reported within RIDDOR's strict timeframes.

Near-miss reporting is where construction compliance most often breaks down. Near-misses are leading indicators — they tell you where the next serious incident is coming from, before it happens. But when near-miss reports go into a site folder or a paper form that nobody reviews, they generate no learning. An investigation workflow that routes each near-miss to a named owner, with a deadline and a required corrective action, is the difference between a near-miss programme that works and one that just generates paperwork.

Method statements and risk assessments — known as RAMS — are the backbone of safe work planning in construction. They need to be current, site-specific, and actually communicated to the people doing the work. When method statements are stored as Word documents on a shared drive, version control breaks down, review dates are missed, and there's no record of who has read and understood each document. Managing RAMS digitally means knowing which assessments are current, which are due for review, and who has signed them off.
